  • Qualification : NVQ Amenity Horticulture Level 1 or Level 2
  • Course duration : 12 months
  • Days : Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
  • Times : 10am-1pm and 2pm-4pm
  • Courses start in September and January each year
  • Approved by City and Guilds, delivered in partnership with Hackney Community College
  • Working with a specialist tutor with considerable experience in garden design and horticulture
  • Sites to include; Hoxton Trust Community Garden N1, St. Johns Gardens N1 and Hoxton Square N1
  • Learning practicing new skills gained through formal training and work experience
  • Gaining a recognised qualification : NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) in Amenity Horticulture Level 1
  • Help with basic skills related to the course, making job applications and career guidance
Course content

Unit 1 Demonstrate safe & effective working practices

  • Contribute to healthy and safe working practices
  • Respond to emergencies

Unit 2 Plant and establish plants

  • Prepare the land for planting
  • Establish plants

Unit 3 Maintain plants
Unit 4
Maintenance of grass services
Unit 5
Maintain structures and services

Unit 6
Maintain equipment

  • Prepare equipment for use
  • Clean and maintain equipment after use

Additional areas covered

  • Plant identification, visits to other gardens and plant nurseries
  • Plant libraries/catalogues and ordering
  • Quantity surveying and costing
  • Broader insight into garden design, plants and materials
  • Help with finding work
